All of us have an inner child. Throughout our lives, we have had several experiences in which we have felt the presence of our inner child. For example, you may witness individuals wondering why they act like furious children, why they cannot put the past behind them, finish a fight, or behave maturely.

Where does the ability to forget some things come from, and why do they hold to certain things? Why do individuals sense anxiety before doing specific tasks in which they have previously encountered failure or rejection? And yet, some people continue to be afraid, some continue to be wounded by certain things, some are unable to alter their habits and behavior patterns, despite their best efforts, and they continue to suffer and feel sad and lonely from the inside. The inner child inside us has experienced some level of pain in each of these situations; it may have experienced rejection, failure, or shame due to suffering.

As a result, anytime we encounter such feelings, we must remember that this is not us. We feel these emotions because our inner child has been hurt and is in pain. So, to conclude, we must recognize that, just as we have this wounded child inside us, we also have seeds of knowledge and awareness planted within us. Each of us has the abilities of compassion, empathy, and profound understanding, which we may use to heal our inner child and end its suffering. Inner child healing therapy is the term used to describe this procedure.

Our hurt child may symbolize generations. It’s possible that our mother struggled throughout her life, or maybe our father was hurt. Perhaps our parents could not provide enough care for the wounded kid themselves. As a result, when we embrace the wounded child inside ourselves, we also love all of the wounded children from our previous generations. We are engaging in this practice for ourselves, but we are also engaging in it for countless generations of ancestors and descendants.

What is Inner Child Work?

Inner child work, also known as inner child healing, is a technique for addressing the needs we didn’t get as children and healing the attachment wounds we’ve developed due to that neglect.

Taking the time to go within begins removing our everyday coping mechanisms (such as avoiding our feelings or feeling nothing at all) and allowing our subconscious to be entirely accepted and integrated into consciousness.

What Type of Therapy is Inner Child Work?

Many types of therapy include inner child work. It’s used in EMDR, sensorimotor psychotherapy (SMP), somatic psychotherapy (SMT), art therapy (Story or Narrative Treatment), and trauma therapy, to mention a few.

The objective of inner child work is to talk to our inner child in their language, which is emotional and physical rather than intellectual.

Signs that your Inner Child needs Healing

The following are symptoms associated with original attachment wounds:

1. Highly Reactive

We may recognize our wounded inner child when we become too reactive to circumstances or feel disconnected or annoyed.

2. Overvaluing Independence

This might appear like repeating “I don’t need anybody” and not asking for assistance.

4. Destructive coping methods

This may manifest as excessive drinking, shopping, gambling, eating, or laziness.

5. Emotional and Mental Illness.

This may manifest in many ways, including:

  • Depression
  • Demotivated
  • Wanting more alone or social time (avoidance manifesting in different ways)
  • Not wanting sex or wanting more sex to bond with the partner
  • Sleep issues

Attachment scars cause people to unknowingly replicate childhood attachment patterns in adult relationships, romantic or not. They’re repeating childhood trauma patterns.

How to begin Healing your Inner Child

To heal your inner child some of the most recommended exercises are the following.

Embrace your Inner Child

​​To begin healing, you must first acknowledge the existence of your inner child inside you. Everyone may connect with their inner child provided they’re willing to explore the nature of their connection with this kid. If you are hesitant or opposed to the thought of investigating your history, you will have a more difficult time getting started with the healing process.

If the idea of opening up to your kid self seems a bit uncomfortable or awkward, consider thinking about inner child work as a journey of self-discovery instead.  Identifying and embracing your inner child consists of recognizing and accepting things that caused you sorrow when you were a youngster. Bringing these wounds into the open might assist you in better understanding their significance.

In many cases, people find it helpful or even comforting to talk to their inner child like they would talk to a natural person. So don’t be afraid to do it yourself.

Listen to your Inner Child.

Journal as your Inner Child

Meditation has many health advantages, but some are directly related to inner child work.  Meditation, for one, increases conscious self-awareness, encouraging you to pay attention to everyday emotions. Greater awareness of your emotions makes it simpler to identify inappropriate responses.

Meditation also helps you accept negative feelings. When children aren’t encouraged to express themselves, they have difficulty identifying unpleasant feelings. They may hide or conceal their sentiments to escape punishment or please caretakers.

Meditation helps you learn how to recognize and accept any feelings in your life. It also helps you learn how to sit with them. To be healthy, you must learn to accept your emotions as they come.
